Neat pictures from the Athabasca Glacier

May 13

I know I'm going back in time now, but I wanted to share these pictures of a place I really enjoyed visiting: The Athabasca Glacier in Banff National Park in Alberta, which I visited before meeting up with the Roadtrek group in Dawson Creek, British Columbia.  Banff and Jasper (north of Banff) are connected by the Icefields Parkway.  You can see why it is named this from the picture.  It is a gorgeous drive with the snow-covered mountains and glaciers visible the whole way.  There is a company that takes you up in a special bus to the Athabasca Glacier where you can get out and walk around for 20 minutes.  I have been here before (27 years ago?), and was very anxious to repeat the experience.  In some places (not where we were), the ice on these glaciers is over 1000 feet thick!

(These are my hiking poles, not ski poles!)

It's like a winter wonderland up here --- in the summertime!
